Practicum & Internship Opportunities

Students are encouraged to pursue an internship because of the concrete insights into their disciplines that they gain through experiential learning. The potential opportunities that can come from these experiences offer students unique learning outcomes that build a foundation for their career development.

High-quality internships enable students to explore their fields of study from the unique perspective of application in contemporary social contexts. Academic Internships must be goal oriented, well-constructed, substantive, and appropriate to the specific academic discipline.

Who is eligible?

Albertus Magnus College students in good academic standing (G.P.A. of at least 2.0) may participate in:

  • Practicum once they have completed 45 credits
  • Internship once they have completed 60 credits

To be eligible to participate in practicum or internship, students must be registered for internship or a practicum course, complete the online orientation seminar, submit all required documentation, as well as any other requirements of your major. Students must be available for at least 8-10 hours per week (3 credit experience) and have transportation. The schedules of sites and industries vary. Most sites are only available to supervise interns during normal business hours.

What makes Practicum and Internships unique?

Practicum provide students with an opportunity to observe experts in a given field, introducing them to the practical applications of subject matter encountered through course work. Designed as an initial experience for students, practicum may carry from 1 to 3 credit hours. Some departments require hands-on experience as part of the practicum.

Internships offer students who have successfully completed significant coursework in their chosen majors with an opportunity to gain hands-on experience in the field under the supervision of an on-site professional. The purpose of internships is to enable students to draw intellectual connections between what they have learned in coursework and what they learn on the internship site, which they make explicit through a final project incorporating both academic work and insights gained through the internship experience. Internships can be designed such that they carry from 3 to 9 credit hours.

Credits and Hours

Each credit hour of a practicum or internship course requires that a student complete 40 hours of field experience in addition to other course requirements as determined by individual departments. Students who participate for credit typically earn 3 credits for 120 hours of supervised work during a semester; however, a student may be able to earn up to 12 credits for 480 hours. Each individual department will determine the number of credits a student is eligible to register for in a semester. Students will not be awarded additional credits at the end of a semester if they complete more than the required number of hours.

Practicum and Internship Time Commitment:

Practicum and internship experiences typically run semester-long from September-December and January-May. Some practicum or internship experiences may be available for some majors during the summer term. Unless specified prior to acceptance of a position, students are committed to remaining in their practicum or internship position for the entire duration of the semester.

Testimonials:

"My experience as an intern was absolutely wonderful. The structure of the internship program at Albertus is set-up to help you learn and succeed in the position you attain. When I entered the New Haven Promise Office requesting to be an intern, I remember my supervisor telling me "This will not be a simple internship where you'll be filing papers and such. We do real work here." I eagerly looked forward to working on an additional project at my original place of work. As a New Haven Promise Scholar, I knew what the organization was: a scholarship for students who live in New Haven and attend New Haven public school who earn a minimum of 3.0 GPA, have 90% attendance and 40 hours of community service during their high school career. During my internship, I got to be the lead project manager for College Goal Sunday a nation-wide event focused on increasing college affordability and accessibility through FAFSA completion and access to information about college and the application process. My College Goal Sunday event was the most attended and the most FAFSA completion of all of the Connecticut College Goal events. My work at New Haven Promise didn't stop there. I was in charge of students who were struggling academically and drafted an Academic Improvement Plan, which the student and I reviewed to ensure a successful semester and establish healthy academic habits. The research methods course I was taking at Albertus was helpful as I created graphs for community events that allowed parents, guardians and students to see the benefits and beneficiaries of the program. The sociological theories that I learned and concepts of social work were also applicable. I cannot express the amount of fulfillment and joy that I felt upon completing my internship successfully while using the knowledge I learned in the classroom and applying it to real life situations. I thank New Haven Promise and Albertus Magnus College for the opportunity and the preparation."

-Jorgieliz Casanova, Class of 2017

"As Walt Disney once said, "˜You can design and create, and build the most wonderful place in the world, but it takes people to make the dream a reality.' As a Disney World Intern, I got to be one of those people who made an impact on a family's vacation memories that will last a lifetime."
